What are the bad things in commercial deodorant & antiperspirant?
One of the most harmful chemicals that both men and women put on their bodies is antiperspirant.
When you think about it, it makes sense. Antiperspirant or Deodorant is a product that inhibits your body’s natural secretion of toxins. An antiperspirant and deodorant will clog your skin follicles so that you’re not able to sweat as much as your body requires.
On top of inhibiting your body’s natural cleansing and detoxifying process, deodorants and antiperspirants also release tons of harmful chemicals into our bodies.
The first thing that I’ll talk about is aluminum. Aluminum is used in antipersiprant & deodorant because of it’s ability to clog up sweat glands. This stops you from sweating. They are featured mostly in antiperspirants, but a lot of deodorants are actually both an antiperspirant and a deodorant. Aluminum is really bad news because, it gets absorbed into the skin, lymph nodes & estrogen receptors in the breast. Some believe this contributes to breast cancer.
Another toxin in deodorants are parabens. Parabens are used as preservatives in order to keep deodorant fresh. I’m not exactly sure why deodorant would need to be fresh, but who cares? This stuff gets into your body and mimics the hormone estrogen. This causes havoc for everyone but especially men by confusing their endocrine systems with elevated estrogen levels.
Finally, a toxin called propylene glycol is put in deodorants to keep the stuff from drying out. This stuff is also a neurotoxin that will destroy your liver and kidneys. In low amounts it’s considered to be safe but it's not a gamble that worth taking so we don't add it.
But what the deal with all natural deodorant causing 'pit rash?'
Remember that saying, “Strong enough for a man, but ph balanced . . . “
You totally finished that sentence, didn’t you?
Well, it’s true. Underarm rashes, commonly referred to as 'pit rash,' are often caused by a pH imbalance – a disruption in the naturally occurring acid mantle that acts as a skin barrier to bacteria and viruses. Women tend to have a slightly lower pH than men, but all of us are in the range of 4.5 to 6.2, which is acidic. Sometimes natural deodorants are too alkaline for our personal pH, but no fear!
The Pit TKO formula has a neutral pH that is more compatible with sensitive skin because of the use of Food Grade DE & Bentonite Clay rather than baking soda which is very alkaline.
Sometimes, though, it’s a detox reaction rather than a pH issue. It makes sense that if we’ve been applying a deodorant or antiperspirant containing parabens, aluminum, propylene glycol, and/or triclosan, your body may begin working to eliminate it once you stop using them. That elimination of accumulated toxins can irritate your skin but luckily it only lasts a week or so.
Lastly, in some instances, it’s an allergic reaction. For example, some folks who are unknowingly sensitive to GMO corn may have
trouble with a cornstarch-based deodorant. Fortunately, the soothing formula in Pit TKO is not cornstarch based and is great for sensitive skin. Instead, we use Arrowroot Powder which is great for moisture control.
Pit TKO solves the ‘pit rash’ mystery, regardless of underlining the reason.
What is the Arm Pit Detox Process from conventionally available antiperspirant?
If you are making the switch to natural deodorant from an antiperspirant or deodorant, you may experience a 'Pit Detox.' After discontinuing antiperspirant use, the body needs a chance to release sweat and toxins through the pores, which can be odorous, that had been previously disabled because of the aluminum.
In general, you should expect a 3-7 day detox to allow your body an opportunity to do a toxic dump. Luckily, Pit TKO has Bentonite Clay and Food Grade DE which help draw out moisture and remove those accumulated toxins like aluminum and paraben, effectively helping speed up the 'Pit Detox' process.
Keep in mind that during the Pit Detox you will most likely experience unusually smelly pits, which is totally normal and expected. Just use even more Pit TKO Deo during detox and don't forget that this smelly phase won't last very long. Ultimately, your body will thank you for committing to being chemical free!
